Welcome Baby Luke!

Michelle had her baby - a beautiful, perfect little baby boy! As tradition a few of us staked out at the hospital to wait for his arrival.

A special Happy Birthday to Yuli too, who gets to share her birthday!

School update

It's been quite a while since I gave an update on the kids' progress, so here goes:

Austin is plowing through his math book, and can add, subtract, count to 100, count by 2s, 3s, 5s & 10s. He is also learning place value, basic fractions, time & currency. He is reading like a champ, now completing his phonics workbook mostly on his own. He reads his own instructions, then does the lesson activities independently. He is still doing his science lessons with Aunt Patti-Lynn. She always has fun activities planned, for example last week they waded in Nanny's pond looking for creatures and found tadpoles and a crayfish.

Bryanna has made major progress in the last few months. She has a completely different learning style than Austin and has difficulty remembering her lessons. She struggles with remembering the alphabet and identifying the letters, but has neat printing and can identify the phonetic sounds of each letter. After much deliberation we decided to start her on the same program Austin has been using this year, regardless of the advanced level. The book's spiral effect has made all the difference, gradually adding on to each lesson while reviewing the previous ones. I'm pleased to say she is now able to identify most of the alphabet and has begun sounding out words.

I've already begun researching curriculum for next year to include additional subjects. We plan to join a local homeschool co-op starting in September so that will introduce different subjects as well as give us time to socialize with other families.  I came across some great sites that post literature lesson plans and study guides for all ages. I plan to start reading the Magic Tree House series next week to try it out. Hopefully the kids will enjoy it and we'll add a chapter to our regular school day.

Spring has Sprung!

The weather here has been crazy warm. It actually hit  31C (88F) with the humidex! I know- I didn't know it was possible  to count a humidex in March.  I actually had to dig out summer clothes.  We've even brought our schoolwork out to the patio. Needless to say, we spent as much time as possible playing outside with our friends. "What time is it Mr. Wolf?" is the newest favorite game. Even Cameron & Hanna get in on the fun.

Happy Birthday Brian!

Guess who's the newest (handsome) member of the 30s club?

The party theme was a no-brainer. Lego remains to be his favorite obsession - demonstrated by the multiple bins & bins of Lego on our bedroom floor.

Keeping with the kid-at-heart tone, the cake was rainbow-tie-dyed, with Oreo cookies & fondant built into the shape of a Lego brick. The marshmallows were easy- just painted with food colouring. The cake pops were fun to make, though I admit it was hard trying to make each one unique.

Sorry Austin, all the gifts were age-appropriate. (No Lego sets today...)

Later, we played Just Dance on the wii. The best part was this little lady:

The second the music started, she stood up with one hand in the air wiggled her bum to the music. She was more entertaining than the adults - and that's saying something! Brian & Matt dancing a duet to "Barbie Girl" is quite a site!
